LA GRANDE, Ore. – Northwest’s Taylor Young has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference men’s soccer Player of the Year by a vote of the CCC head coaches. Tim Kagey of Corban received Defensive Player of the Year honors while Warner Pacific’s Mario Guizar earns Newcomer of the Year.

Young, a 5-foot-10 senior midfielder from Bellevue Wash., was a major contributor to his team’s success helping the Eagles reach second place in the regular season standings and a playoff berth. Young finished the year leading the conference in assists recording eight in 17 matches. He totaled 54 shots with 11 goals, six of which were game winning goals.

Corban’s Kagey was an essential part of the Warriors defense during their conference championship run. The 6-foot-2 sophomore defender from West Linn, Ore., helped Corban finish the year second in the conference in shutouts with 8, and fourth in goals allowed with 26. The Warriors will head to the opening rounds of the NAIA National tournament after a victory on the road earned them the CCC title.

Guizar, a 5-foot-8 junior forward from Kennewick, Wash., transferred to Warner Pacific after a successful career at Walla Walla Community College. He tallied 80 shots in only 18 matches, an average of 4.44 shots per game which led the CCC. Guizar ended his first season for the Knights with the second most goals in the conference with 14.

Dan Birkey of Concordia has been chosen as the conference’s Coach of the Year. Already one of the winningest coaches in history, Birkey is coming off a 13-5 record overall, 12-2 in conference, and a regular season championship. This season marks the 20th winning season in a row for Birkey.
