SALEM, Ore.—Using a dominating rebounding night, the Concordia University women's basketball team shook off a tough shooting night to defeat Willamette University 62-60 on Wednesday.
Concordia held Willamette (3-3) to just 23 points in the first half, taking a seven-point lead into the break, but needed a last-second Jordyn Peacock (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge H.S.) jumper to break a tie and send the Cavaliers to a perfect 4-0 record to start the season under first-year head coach Sean Kelly.
Peacock gave CU a 13-point lead (38-25) early in the second half, the largest for either team, only to see the home side pull within a point on a Kylie Towry 3-pointer with 4:06 remaining.
Briannah Smith (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) followed with a layup and Lexi Campbell (Brentwood, Calif./Heritage H.S.) drained a key 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining to give the Cavs a 60-54 lead.
Battling back yet again, Willamette tied the game on a JoJo DeLong layup with 1:17 left in regulation but missed its next three shots in an attempt to take the lead before Peacock's game-winner.
Smith led the Cavs with 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting while Peacock added 15 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Concordia finished with a 53 to 33 advantage in total rebounds.
DeLong led Willamette with 17 points. Teammate Katie Kalugin scored 13 and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Overall, Willamette outshot the Cavs 38.6 percent to 36.4 percent. A day after hitting 17 3-pointers, Concordia connected on just 3 of 20 from long range.
Concordia will return to action on Dec. 29 when it hosts the University of Puget Sound. Opening tip is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Cavalier Gymnasium.
