Saints Defeat Northwest U in Lynda Goodrich Classic

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Freshman Elin Johansson came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points,10 of them in the second half, helping Saint Martin's University claim a 71-54 victory over Northwest University in first-day action Friday, Nov. 28, at the 18th annual Western Washington University Lynda Goodrich Women's Basketball Classic being held at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

Brooke Paulson added 11 points and five assists and Krista Stabler had 10 points for the Saints, who improved to 2-3.

Chanara Greene led Northwest, which fell to 5-2, with game-highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Hannah Carlson scored 8 points, while Jordan Asher and Krisen Frey each scored 6 for the Eagles. NU out rebounded SMU 36-32.

The score was tied at 15-15 eight minutes into the game, but Saint Martin's held the Eagles to just four points in the next nine minutes to open up a 39-19 lead with a little under three minutes left in the period. The Saints held a 42-26 lead at halftime. 
Northwest pulled to within eight points on two occasions early in the second half, but got no closer. 

The Saints shot only 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field, but overcame that by hitting 23-of-34 free throws (67.6 percent), with Johannson going 8-of-10, and forcing 28 Eagle turnovers.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, Saint Martin's plays nationally No.6-ranked University of Tampa at 5 p.m. and Northwest meets WWU at 7:30 p.m.
