CC- How did you choose COI to continue your athletic and academic career?
JF- I chose The College of Idaho to continue my academic and athletic careers because it seemed to fit all that I wanted to achieve in my four years of college as well as the many years to follow. Athletically I was blessed to be able to continue both sports that I love, while academically I was going to be challenged and tested in areas of study that truly interested me.
CC- What are some of the demands of being a student athlete?
JF- The biggest demand of being a student athlete is simply time. Time may be one of the most precious commodities in this world purely out of the fact that it is a very rare if not impossible occasion to gain more time for the requirements that are pressed upon any person whether they be a student or after their collegiate career. Student athletes know their time is of the most precious of resources because it is drastically limited due to practice, games, and travel. What this means is fitting in everything that must get done whenever there is an opportunity.
CC- What are some of your best experiences so far, both academically and athletically at college?
JF- Academically the best experiences in college have come from the classes that I am involved in. Being a double major has allowed me to experience many different ways of thinking and gain new perspective into old arguments. My favorite classes have been Constitutional Law I and II because they have challenged me in all ways academically and gave hands on experience in terms of allocating values. Athletically the best experiences have come day in and day out. Being able to go to the track or hit the pitch and play the sports I love are the best experiences any athlete could hope for because this is where all the memories are made whether it be the most important game of the season or simply a warm up at a track practice this is where bonds are formed, games are won or lost, and records are set – all memories that will last a lifetime.
CC- Who are some influential people in your life at COI?
JF- Many of my teachers have become influential in my life pushing me to test myself in classes and pressing my knowledge to its limits. My track coaches have pushed me in similar ways of reaching for the outer bounds of my capabilities in a physical sense always striving for faster, farther, and more. Most importantly my friends and teammates have been the most influential in my life formulating my conduct, my drive, and my spirit with which I play the game of life everyday.
CC- When not competing or studying what do you do for fun?
JF- My life is never empty of competition. Life is a competition and the way I see it, you might as well win. This means when intercollegiate sports or school aren’t taking up my free time I find myself in constant competition with friends and others in any activity I can get my hands on whether that is disc golf, pool, Intramural sports, or any other sort of game I can turn into a competition.
CC- What do you hope to accomplish as a member of the CCC-SAAC?
JF- As a member of CCC SAAC I want to be able to expand what we thought possible in our goals that we have set. I realize that not all these goals are things that are necessarily within the realm of possibility, but I do want to execute the goals that can be achieved within in this organization in an attempt to better the athletics of our schools as well as the individual’s wellbeing as a student athlete.
CC- What do you see yourself doing after graduation?
JF- I will apply for the Rhodes scholarship this coming year and take the LSAT in preparation for applying and attending law school.
