Concordia Powers by Oregon Tech, Rematch in CCC First Round Play
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Oregon Tech was unable to get by Concordia University in the last Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season match of the season, falling 3-1 (25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20), but the Owls would move on to the postseason for the second-straight year after College of Idaho posted a four set win over Northwest Christian to eliminate the Beacons tonight in Eugene.
Oregon Tech finished in sixth place with a 7-11 mark in CCC action and will face third-seed Concordia University, this time in Portland, in first round tournament action Tuesday, November 11
th at 7 p.m.
Kristin DePaoli led the Owls with nine kills with Renee Baumann recording eight and Whitney Webster six in the loss. Baumann anchored the Tech defense with 12 digs with 10 each coming from Kelsey Sampson, Megan Holland and Jennifer Lakin.
Brianna Hogan tallied a match-high 13 kills, followed by 12 from Brenna Huwe and 11 by Nicole Barth. Jenessa Taylor finished with 45 assists and Shantel Gritsch 22 digs in the win for CU. Concordia finished CCC play at 14-4 and 17-8 overall.
Concordia rolled to a 25-14 decision in the opening set, using a nine point run to go up 16-9 after trailing 9-7. The Cavaliers would close the set out on a four point run and go up 1-0.
The Owls hit at a -.118 clip in the opener compared to CU at .185. Mykala Rubey recorded three kills to lead the Owls in set 1. CU received three kills each from both Nicole Barth and Briana Hogan.
A 3-0 run broke a 5-all tie with CU next stringing together six more to go up 14-6. Whitney Webster kills stopped the bleeding for the Owls, but it wasn’t enough for the home team, as the Cavs went up 2-0 with another decisive win, 25-14.
The Owls improved their attack percentage to .083, but with CU hitting .303, Tech couldn’t hang around with the Cavaliers. Joelle Swanson and Kelsey Sampson tallied three kills in set 2 for Tech. Ashley Jibby and Brenna Huwe managed three kills each for CU.
The team’s traded points and were tied eight times before the Owls moved up 23-20 behind a pair of CU miscues and a kill from Kristen Depaoli. CU managed to tie the match at 23-all, using a Brianna Hogan spike and two Tech errors. Depaoli made it 24-23 and Kelsey Sampson closed out Set 3 with an ace, as the Owls cut the deficit to 2-1 with the 25-23 win.
Tied 4-all in set 4, Concordia used a 5-0 run to move up 9-4 and the Owls wouldn’t find their rhythm for the rest of the set. Concordia powered their way to a 25-14 lead, but the Owls would score six-straight and cut the deficit to 24-20. CU scored the next point and closed it out 25-20.
