Becca Long and the CU defense limited Corban to just one shot on goal on Saturday.
Cavs set for CCC title rematch after dispatching Corban, 3-1
PORTLAND, Ore. – Defending home-field advantage with aplomb, the No. 3-ranked Concordia University women's soccer team defeated Corban University 3-1 Saturday at Tuominen Yard to advance to the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament final.
The Cavaliers (15-1-2) struck early when
Martha Heaps (Spokane, Wash./Mead H.S.)' lofting shot seemed to surprise the Corban defense, drifting over the Warriors' keeper from outside the right edge of the box and back to the left side of the net in the 6th minute. It was Heaps' first goal of her career.
The teams traded fruitless runs the rest of the half, though the Warriors (10-7-3) did have a near-miss to equalize when Katelyn Fekkes' shot rebounded off the crossbar in the 28th minute. The 1-0 margin held at the break.
After a scoreless stretch to open the second period, Concordia made it 2-0 in the 59th minute when
Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) headed in an
Ariel Kanable (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge H.S.) corner from the left side to the far post from seven yards out.
That margin stood for 20 minutes, until the Cavaliers executed a free kick to perfection that made it 3-0.
Shannon McMahon (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Bishop Blanchet H.S.) sent a sharp ball to Ames from the right, which Ames then delivered back to the right side of the box to a streaking
Bobbi Eckler (Vancouver, Wash./Union H.S.), who put it away low and to the left for the score.
The Warriors managed to get on the board with an Emily Anderson penalty kick in the 90th minute following a foul in the box. But opportunities were hard to come by for Corban overall in the match, as Concordia outshot the Warriors 19-10 (11-1 in shots on goal) and accumulated 10 corner kicks to just two for the visitors.
Concordia advances to the CCC tournament final, held Nov. 15 at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash. The Eagles beat Warner Pacific 2-1 in extra time Saturday to move on. The time for the championship match is 12 p.m.
The matchup will be the third straight season the two teams have met in the conference finale. Concordia defeated the Eagles 3-0 at home last season and 1-0 at home in 2011. Northwest hosted the Cavs in the championship match in 2012, falling to the Cavs 2-1 in overtime.
