Gray's Double-Double Not Enough as Geoducks Fall to Loggers
TACOMA - Brittany Gray scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Wednesday night but it wasn't enough for the Evergreen Geoducks, who dropped a 65-62 non-conference women's basketball game to the host Puget Sound Loggers at Memorial Fieldhouse.
With the loss, their third straight, the Geoducks are now 4-3 for the season. The Loggers stayed unbeaten in eight games.
Gray's double-double was her fourth of the season. Going up against a much taller Puget Sound front line, the senior post was 7-for-16 from the field and had four of her rebounds on the offensive end of the floor.
Sadee Jones tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while LaNiecia Weatherspoon added 10 points and seven boards. The Geoducks shot 36 percent (22-for-61) overall and 50 percent (6-for-12) from three-point range.
Evergreen won the battle of the boards with 44 rebounds to 37 for the hosts.
Amanda Forshay was one of four different Loggers to score 12 points and she led her team wtih 10 rebounds. Joining Forshay with a dozen points were Katy Ainslie, Alex Noren and Emily Sheldon. Puget Sound shot 38 percent (22-for-58) from the field and 78 percent (14-for-18) at the free throw line.
Puget Sound scored the first six points of the game, led 19-6 a little more than five minutes into the first half, and seemed on the way to an easy win. The Geoducks, however, would have none of that.
Consecutive three-point field goals by Karina Gee and Sadee Jones cut the deficit to five points, and then in the closing two minutes Gray drained a three-pointer from the top of the key and Jones hit a layup to make it a 40-33 game at the half.
Puget Sound led throughout the second half, rebuilding a double-digit advantage at 50-40 with 13:46 left in the game.
Again the Geoducks rallied back, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to get within 53-51 with 7:37 to play. That was as close as they got, however, as the Loggers held on the rest of the way.
Evergreen returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts the Pacific Boxers in another non-conference game at CRC Gymnasium.
