PORTLAND, Ore.—Kelly Huey (San Francisco, Calif./Lincoln H.S.) connected on a last-second layup to preserve a wire-to-wire win for Concordia as the Cavaliers defeated Corban University 64-62 on Tuesday night.
With a winter storm that hit the metro last weekend causing several postponements of the matchup, Concordia (7-18, 4-9 CCC) was able to maintain its momentum built up from tough road wins the week before.
The Cavs immediately jumped out to an 8-0 lead off three quick layups and a pair of free throws by
Briannah Smith (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral). Over the first five minutes, Corban (11-15, 6-8 CCC) was held to just a single field goal, a Tara Vanweerdhuizen layup at the 16:26 mark which enabled the home team to generate an early 10-point lead.
The lead would not be relinquished; however Corban had a strong run in the dead center of the first half, bringing the score to a tight 18-16 on a Payton Wilcox layup.
With a few baskets in the paint and a pair of 3-pointers by
Lexi Campbell (Brentwood, Calif./Heritage H.S.), the Cavs quickly built the spread back out to nine (27-18) before ending the half up 31-26.
The second half opened with a Wilcox jumper, but after this strike the two teams followed a similar outline from the first half with Concordia clinging to a slight lead throughout much of the period.
Corban made a final push in the final minutes as Tara Vanweerdhuizen scored 11 straight points for the Warriors to get to within one at 58-57.
With 28 seconds left on the clock,
Kelly Huey (San Francisco, Calif./Lincoln H.S.) drained a pair of free throws to provide a three-point edge (62-59). Looking for its first tie since the opening jump, Corban's Jade Lowery then connected on a Sadie Pilgeram assisted 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go.
Locked at 62-62 in the final seconds, Huey drove down the lane and managed to create space for a final shot. Glancing off the glass, Huey's game-winning layup left Corban just one second to work with where a failed 3-pointer from near half court fell short.
With 12 of her team-high 18 points in the final 20 minutes, Huey showcased a strong second half to keep Corban from taking a lead. Huey added five assists, four rebounds and two steals by the end of the night in the well-rounded performance.
Caitlyn McCutcheon (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) added her eighth 'double-double' of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Campbell chipped in with 12 points.
Vanweerdhuizen had a standout night for Corban with 27 points and 13 rebounds while Wilcox finished with 13 points with 11 rebounds.
Concordia will look to continue its season-best three-game winning streak at Northwest on Feb. 14. Corban, meanwhile, will host Eastern Oregon in Salem, Ore., on Friday.
