CU Baseball Splits on Final Day of Cavalier Classic
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Concordia baseball team split their final two games of the Cavalier Classic on Sunday with a 7-3 victory against the College of Idaho and a tough 16-8 loss to George Fox University at Porter Park.
With the results, Concordia moved to 3-2 on the season.
Concordia will return to action Feb. 21-23 as it hosts the CCC-NWC Challenge at Porter Park. Corban, Oregon Tech will represent the Cascade Collegiate Conference while Puget Sound and Willamette will represent the Northwest Conference. Saint Martin's, an NCAA DII, member will also be playing in the tournament.
GAME #1: Concordia 7, College of Idaho 3
A four-run first inning boosted Concordia to a 7-3 victory over the College of Idaho in the opening game of a triple-header played at Porter Park on Sunday
Blake Drake (Ramona, Calif./Ramona H.S.) led off the home half of the first inning with a single through the rightside and would come around to score on a single to left-center by
Christian Lichtenthaler (Albany, Ore./West Albany H.S.). After a strikeout,
Blake Evetts (Tigard, Ore./Jesuit H.S.) drove home Lichtenthaler for the second run of the inning before
Cole Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview H.S.) and
Ian Erickson (Astoria, Ore./Astoria H.S.) concluded the attack with RBI singles of their own.
The Yotes responded with two runs in the fourth and a single score in the fifth with Gregg Simonds delivering a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to left in the consecutive innings.
Concordia added three more runs in the eighth inning to secure the win. Erickson led off the inning with a single to shortstop and would come around to score on a double by
Trent Calmer (Beaverton, Ore./Southridge H.S.). Drake would keep the inning alive with a double of his own, driving in Calmer from second base while Lichtenthaler would cap off the frame with an RBI triple to right-center field.
CU starting pitcher
Harrison McGhee (Ramona, Calif./Ramona H.S.) earned the win after putting in five innings of work on the mound. McGhee allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six batters, three of which occurred while striking out the side in the second.
C of I's starting pitcher Ryan Eddy went five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.
GAME #2: George Fox 16, Concordia 8
After nearly giving away a three-run lead in the first, George Fox plated seven runs in the third inning en route to a 16-8 win in the nightcap which featured 30 hits between the two teams.
The Bruins touched CU starter
Ryan Garrett (Seattle, Wash./Ballard H.S.) for three runs in the first, but quickly gave CU two runs back in the home half of the stanza.
After being shutdown 1-2-3 in the second, GFU nearly went down quietly in the third inning as the first two batters were retired by CU reliever Ryan McGonigle. The Bruins' Danny Clifford connected on a two-out double before a walk gave GFU a pair of runners for third baseman Clay Mott.
Provided new life on a dropped foul ball down the first-base line, Mott singled to score Clifford which prompted three additional GFU hits, leading to the decisive outburst of seven unearned runs.
GFU scored an additional run in the fourth and five more in the fifth to stake a 16-2 lead. The Cavs scored the final six runs of the contest while relievers
Brennon Mossholder (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas H.S.) and
Blake Evetts (Tigard, Ore./Jesuit H.S.) hurled scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the Cavs.
George Fox outhit the Cavs 16-to-8 with 1-2 hitters Matthew Zeller and Derek Blankenship each scoring three runs each.
Bruin starter Sam Morland snared the win after giving up three runs on four hits before being relieved u the seventh.
