EUGENE, Ore. – NCU's lone senior, Tami Brown, posted one of her best games of the season in her final home game, but it wasn't enough to upset No. 20 Eastern Oregon on Friday night, falling 78-66 in the Morse Event Center.
The Mounties (20-8, 12-4 CCC) shot 43% from the field and survived a 15-turnover night to remain alone in first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with two games remaining. The Beacons (7-18, 3-13 CCC) shot 42% but were out-rebounded in the contest, 43-34.
Eastern Oregon established the early lead and took a 34-25 lead into the intermission. The Beacons would rally to within two points midway through the second half, but the Mounties hung on and pulled away in the games waning moments.
NCU was led by Brown who enjoyed senior night to the tune of a double-double, scoring 20 points with ten rebounds. She was one of three Beacons to post a team-high three assists. Andrea Gloss was the only other player in double-figures for the Beacons, scoring 12 points.
The Mountaineers were led by CCC Player of the Year frontrunner Brittney Newcomb, scoring 24 points along with three assists and six rebounds. Nicole Redd added 20 points including a trio of three-pointers while Madeline Laan scored 16 with a team-high seven rebounds.
NCU, currently sitting in ninth-place in the conference, returns to action for what has turned into the biggest game of the year on Tuesday. The Beacons travel to Portland to take on Concordia University (7-20, 4-11) at 5:30 pm with the inside track to the final playoff spot on the line. The Cavaliers are 1.5 games ahead of the Beacons, but an NCU victory would tie the teams in the all-important win column with just one weekend of action remaining. More importantly, a win would also give Northwest Christian University the season sweep of CU, giving them the tie-breaker if needed.
