Warriors Earn Road Win, Stop WPC 71-58
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Warner Pacific women's basketball team was eliminated from playoff contention after a 71-58 loss to Corban tonight at
Bart Valentine Court.
Four players from the visting Warriors (13-16, 8-9 CCC) scored in double figures, and Corban as a team made 26 of 23 attempts from the free throw line during the win. Twelve different players scored points for the host Knights (6-21, 2-14 CCC), but no individual tallied more than eight. WPC also shot well from the charity stripe at 78 percent (18 of 23).
The early action saw the two squads trading baskets, and score was deadlocked at 12 after eight minutes of play. Megan Benedict then drained three pointer for Corban which gave the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Warner Pacific kept it close thanks to a pair of interior scores from
Ali Campbell, but Corban eventually claimed a 32-25 lead at the halftime buzzer.
An 8-1 run by the Warriors in opening moments of the second period put Corban in control with a cushion that reached as many as 15 points. Kylie Hendryx canned a trey for WP at the 8:19 mark that closed the gap down to eight points, but the Knights could get no closer. Eight straight free throws by Corban over the next 2 minutes of play put the Warriors back in charge.
Courtney Walchli and
Kristen Swim led Warner Pacific with eight points each.
Ali Campbell chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.
Jessica Thoens passed for a team high six assists.
Corban was led by Julia Young with a game high16 points, while Tara Vanweerdhuizen added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
