PORTLAND, Ore.— Tyler Gutierrez, a 6-foot-8 post from Portland's Sunset High School, has signed with Concordia University men's basketball team, head coach Brad Barbarick announced today.

Gutierrez, a three-year letterwinner for the Apollos, is rated by Northwest Hoops as the No. 1 post in Oregon for the 2014 recruiting class and received recognition as a McDonald's All-American Nominee.

"We are truly very excited to have a player of Tyler's talent and character join our program," Barbarick said. "He is one of the finest all-around post players we have ever recruited. He is a very skilled, works extremely hard and is a top-notch student. He will impact our men's basketball program and our university in a variety of ways."
So far into his senior campaign Gutierrez leads the No. 6-ranked Apollos with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks per game.

Gutierrez earned First-Team All-Metro League honors as a junior, as well as earning second-team All-Tournament honors at the 6A Basketball Championships where Sunset finished sixth at state. Currently, the Apollos have a 16-6 overall record and carry an impressive 7-1 mark in the Metro League. Sunset will play host to Jesuit High School on Feb. 26 with a Metro League title at stake.

"Tyler is a legit 6-8 post that has a very impressive skillset and adding a high school player of his size that can score from the post, midrange, from behind the 3-point line and off the dribble is very exciting," CU assistant coach Jeff Christianson said. "I had the pleasure of coaching Tyler as a freshman at Sunset and I could see his potential immediately. He has put in the work to develop into the player he is now."

"We are very excited about Tyler becoming a Cavalier not only for his basketball skills, but for how well-rounded he is as a person as he is extremely smart and of high character. I expect him to have a tremendous career and leave a lasting impression at Concordia as a student-athlete."

Concordia (22-8, 11-7 CCC) finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament. The Cavaliers will host No. 7-seeded Oregon Tech on Wednesday, Feb. 26 in the quarterfinals of the conference championship tournament.
