#2 LC State trumps Cavs on Second Day of Porter Park Classic
PORTLAND, Ore.—British Columbia scored a pair of wins on the second day of the Porter Park Classic while No. 2-ranked Lewis Clark State split its contests to create another Sunday showdown of the two NAIA West powers.
UBC defeated Montana State Billings 8-2 in the opener and returned with a 2-0 win over LCSC in the afternoon game. Lewis-Clark State closed out the day with an 8-6 win over the host Concordia Cavaliers.
UBC, now 3-0 in the tournament, will rematch LCSC at 10 a.m. on Sunday while Concordia will close out the Porter Park Classic at 1 p.m. against MSUB.
Game 3 – Lewis-Clark State 8, Concordia 6
Tied 4-4, LCSC scored three runs in the seventh, including two off a Cody Lavalli double down the left-field line to avoid a comeback attempt by the host Cavaliers on Saturday.
Not deterred however, the Cavs plated two runs in the home half of the inning, loading the bases for a 2-out 2-RBI double for
Cole Buruse (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview H.S.).
The Warrirors tacked on an insurance run in the ninth while reliever Kasey Knigge retired CU in order for his first save of the year.
Concordia outhit LCSC 12-to-8 with Buruse posting a 3-for 4 performance. Carsen Nylund earned the win after filling in for starter Steve Thompson, who lasted 5.1 innings. CU starter
Jon Yearout (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River H.S.) went 6.2 innings and struck out four while allowing seven runs, five of which were earned.
Ryan McMonigle (Kaneohe, Hawaii/Kailua H.S. ), who started the game as the team's DH, pitched the final 2.1 frames, allowing two hits while striking out three.
Game 2 – British Columbia 2, Lewis-Clark State 0
UBC starter Jeremy Newton allowed 11 hits over 7.0 innings, but did not yield a run while closer Alex Webb issued just one hot over the final two frames to hand the Warriors its first shutout in two years.
The Thunderbirds scored single runs in both the first and second innings for the lone scores of the game.
Game 3 – British Columbia 8, MSU Billings 2
Taking advantage of four errors by its opponent, British Columbia defeated Montana State Billings 8-2 in the opening game of the second day of action of the Porter Park Classic.
MSU Billings took an early lead with a single run in the first but several miscues led to three spots in the second and the third innings for UBC.
Going four innings, Conor Lilles-White started for UBC and was relieved by Tyler Gillies, who earned the win despite allowing three walks and two hits over 1.2 innings.
The Thunderbirds collected 11 hits in the game with Jerod Bartnik, Kevin Biro and Tyler Ennis each recording 2-hit games.
