Game 2 – Concordia 7, St. Martin's 6
Trading runs over the first three innings, Concordia added extra scores late to overcome an early deficit and manage a doubleheader split against St. Martin's.
The Saints tagged the home team for three runs in the top of the first with Lacey McGladrey leading off with a solo home run to left-center and teammate Christina DeMar following five batter later with a 2-run double to right.
The Cavaliers retaliated with five singles in the bottom half of the frame with
Mariah Jimenez (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) providing a 2-run pop of her own by placing the ball into left field to plate
Kate Santos (Gladstone, Ore./Gladstone H.S.) and
Taylor Copher (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.).
SMU took another lead in the top of the third before the Cavs grabbed its first lead of the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Before the Cavs loaded the bases, Santos led off the frame with a solo homer for a 4-3 lead, but CU only managed a single extra run off of SMU starter Kaylee Lawson as
Meghan Luebbert (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Jimenez.
The Saints cut the deficit to one in the sixth and threatened for more before CU reliever
Lucy Baldovino (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.) managed to get a pair of fly outs to left to end the attack.
Both teams managed single runs over the final two frames with SMU placing the tying run on second with just one out before Baldovino once again pitcher her way out of the jam.
CU outhit the Saints 13 to 11 in the second contest with Santos and
Cassidy Horner (Cottonwood, Calif./West Valley H.S.) each collecting three hits eacH.
Game 1 – St. Martin's 5, Concordia 0
Holding a 1-0 lead to start the inning, St. Martin's piled on four additional runs in the fifth to post a 5-0 win over Concordia in the opening game of the non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
The result was the second time CU has been held without a run this season the other instance occurring in a 3-0 loss to Simpson (Calif.) on Feb. 21.
The Cavaliers left runners on the corners in the first and fourth innings and went on to leave seven runners on the basepaths compared to just four stranded by the Saints.
With CU failing to take the lead in those early innings, SMU broke the game open with the aid of four unearned runs in the fifth. CU starter
McKenzie Marshall (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) got two quick outs via pop ups in the infield before a double down the left-field line by Lacey McGladrey started the spree.
After an error on a play which could have ended the inning, SMU added three more hits in the stanza, including a triple to center by Taviah Jenkins to add to its tally.
With the lead, Saints' starter Sam Munger completed the shutout by allowing just one baserunner, on a hit by pitch, over the final two innings. Munger struck out four while preventing a single walk in the seven-inning performance.
The Saints outhit the home team by an 8 to 6 advantage with McGladrey, the team's leadoff hitter, going 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Rightfielder Meghean Luebbert led the Cavs at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.
