Yotes open CCC season with CU sweep

PORTLAND, Ore.—Nickayla Skinner and Cortni Pena pitched a pair of complete games to lead College of Idaho to a 3-2, 7-4 sweep of Concordia in the opening day of the Cascade Collegiate Conference softball season on Friday afternoon.
With the results, College of Idaho improved to 10-4 on the season while Concordia fell to 7-11. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Oregon at Delta Park. Opening pitch is set for 11 a.m.
Game 1: College of Idaho 3, Concordia 2
With one out in the bottom of the seventh and the tying run on second, Skinner closed out the Cavaliers with a 3-2 win in the opening game of a Friday doubleheader on Friday.
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning unscathed, the Cavs started the game's scoring with a single run in the home half of the first as
Cassidy Horner (Cottonwood, Calif./West Valley H.S.), batting with the bases loaded, drove in a run while getting hit by a Skinner pitch. The Cavs failed to take additional advantage of the early situation as Skinner forced a grounder back to the pitcher's circle to end the attack.
The Yotes broke through in the third frame, taking the lead with with Briana Brace and Ashley Van Horne leading off the inning with back-to-back home runs.
Boosted by a leadoff double by
Katie Aden (Tigard, Ore./Tigard H.S.), CU managed to tie the game up in the third with Horner singling to center to advance Aden.
After a scoreless fourth, C of I plated the eventual game-winning score via an Alexis Macias two-out single that allowed Brace to score after reaching on a single of her own.
Leaving the bases loaded in the first, CU ended up stranding nine total runners on base compared to six for the Yotes.
Skinner improved to 6-2 on the season with the complete-game performance. The senior struck out five and walked one with both scores unearned.
Marshal (4-3) struck out three and walked two in seven innings for the Cavaliers.
Both teams finished with six hits. Brace and Van Horne, C of I's 1-2 hitters, each recorded a pair of hits.
Meghan Luebbert (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.) led CU at the plate with two of the team's six hits.
Game 2: College of Idaho 7 Concordia 4
Posting three-spots in both the first and the third innings, College of Idaho completed a Friday sweep of the Cavaliers with a 7-4 win in the second session of action at Delta Park.
Rowe provided the significant strike in the first with a 2-run triple to right which sent Macias and Van Horne around the bases while consecutive two-out doubles by McKensie Stanton and Pena gave the Yotes a 6-1 lead through three innings.
Moving to the fifth,
Megan Malvick (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam H.S.) initiated a rally by the Cavs by leading off with a solo home run to left. Luebbert and
Rielly Byrd (Puyallup, Wash./Franklin Pierce H.S.) continued to attack with singles to the outfield to setup an RBI single to center by Aden. Two batters later,
Taylor Bussey (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) connected on a sacrifice fly to right to plate Byrd for a 6-4 deficit.
Pena closed out the game's account with a solo homer in the sixth while Pena, C of I's, starter allowed just a single baserunner over the final two innings to complete the win.
