Cavs erupt for 20 runs in Saturday sweep

PORTLAND, Ore.—Bouncing back from two losses on Friday, Concordia defeated Eastern Oregon 9-1 and 11-0 in a pair of inning-reduced CCC games on Saturday at Delta Park.
 
With the results, Concordia improved to 9-11 on the season while EOU fell to 4-4. The Cavs closed out its opening weekend of the CCC season at 2-2 and will return to action on March 21 at Northwest Christian. The Mountaineers fell to 1-3 in conference play and will travel to face Southern Oregon next week.
 
Game 1 – Concordia 9, Eastern Oregon 1 (6 innings)
 
After three scoreless innings, EOU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth but the Cavs returned to score four runs in the home half of the inning and added three in the fifth and two in the sixth to claim a 9-1 victory on Saturday morning.
 
Mariebeth Watanabe opened the third with a double down the left-field line, the team's first hit off CU starter McKenzie Marshall (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.), and would come in to score on a Stephanie Maestretti two-out single.
 
The Cavaliers posted an immediate response with four runs on four hits in the fourth m but were also aided by a trio of Mountaineer errors.
 
The Cavs added three runs in the bottom of the fifth despite using just two hits as Katie Aden (Tigard, Ore./Tigard H.S.) and Cassidy Horner (Cottonwood, Calif./West Valley H.S.) both earned RBI as the team was benefited by a walk and another EOU error.
 
Concordia closed out the game with two more runs in the sixth, claiming a walk-off win after Aden drew a walk with the bases loaded.
 
Marshall allowed just two hits in the complete game performance. The senior struck out three and walked two. Concordia, meanwhile, compiled 12 hits with Aden, Rielly Byrd (Puyallup, Wash./Franklin Pierce H.S.) and Taylor Copher (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.) each gaining two hits.
 
Game 2 – Concordia 11, Eastern Oregon 0 (5 innings)
 
Continuing its offensive explosion, Concordia scored multiple runs in each of the first four runs to topple EOU 11-0 in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader.
 
Leadoff hitter Meghan Luebbert (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.) set the table for the Cavs on numerous occasions, accounting for three runs of the team's runs.
 
Rielly Byrd (Puyallup, Wash./Franklin Pierce H.S.), batting second, went 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored while Cassidy Horner (Cottonwood, Calif./West Valley H.S.), Taylor Copher (Sandy, Ore./Sandy H.S.), Taylor Bussey (Vancouver, Wash./Prairie H.S.) each registered multi-hit games for the Cavs.
 
With plenty of offense at her disposal, Lucy Baldovino (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.) pitched CU's second straight complete game. Baldovino allowed just three hits while striking out five batters.
