NU's Kierston Perry delivers a pitch to the plate Yotes Take Two Games From the Eagles 3/15/2014 4:45:58 PM KIRKLAND, Wash. – No. 13 College of Idaho used solid pitching along with timely hitting to sweep Northwest University in the conference doubleheader today, 9-0 and 6-0. Nicklaya Skinner scattered five Northwest U hits while striking out 8 Eagle hitters for the 9-0 shutout in the first game and Cortni Pena threw a 4 hitter in the second game for the 6-0 shutout. Game 1 – The Yotes (11-4, 3-0 CCC) scored 8 runs in the first two innings to shut out Northwest University 9-0 in 5 innings this afternoon. Briana Brace started the 5 run first inning with a solo home run. Destiny Turner knocked in three runs with her double to left and later scored on Paige Gabiola's sacrifice fly. The Yotes got three more in the second inning highlighted by Katie Rowe's triple scoring Alexie Macias. Paige Long ended the scoring for C of I with her solo home run in the top of the 5th inning. Destiny Turner had four RBIs on the day going 1 for 3 from the plate Alexie Macias went 2 for 2, scored a run and had one RBI. Brianna Brace was 1 for 2 with the home run and Paige Long also added a round tripper with her solo shot. Katelyn Riedinger led Northwest U (1-8, 1-2 CCC) going 2 for 3 for the game while Katelin Lewis, Kierston Perry and Lexie Robbins all went 1 for 2 for the Eagles. Game 2 – C of I's Cortni Pena kept Northwest scoreless with a steady performance on the mound and got run support in the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead. Katie Rowe put the Yotes on the scoreboard with her double to left center which scored Ashley Van Horne who had singled. C of I got three more runs in the 2nd inning when Van Horne hit a 3-run liner over the left field fence to give the Yotes a 4-0 lead. Their bats came alive again in the 5th inning when Van Horne opened the inning with a triple and scored on Alexis Macias ground out. Riliey Cullip came in to get a pinch hit single to left scoring Katie Rowe. Katelin Riedinger went 2 for 3 for Northwest U (1-9, 1-3 CCC) as Hanna Chaffin and Janey Ganta added a hit each for the Eagles. Kiertson Perry took the loss for Northwest on the mound. Ashley Van Horne had a big day for the College of Idaho (12-4, 4-0 CCC) going 3 for 4, scoring 3 times and knocking in 3 runs. Katie Rowe went 2 for 2 with one RBI. "C of I is a solid ball club with the pitching and hitting worthy of their national ranking," stated John Bacon, NU head coach. "We're still coming together, our new players a working hard to fit in and I'm confident we'll see improvement as the season goes along. We've had a couple of injuries which have also set us back, but our team is working hard every day to get better."
