CU's Moses Smashes School Record in the Discus at Saints Open
GRESHAM, Ore.—Throwing the discus in collegiate competition for the first time since claiming the NAIA national title in 2012, Concordia's
Nate Moses (Fresno, Calif./Bullard H.S.) opened his outdoor season by breaking his own school record in the event at the Saints Open on Saturday.
Moses saved his best for last with a 200-0 (60.97m) throw on his sixth and final attempt to immediately lay claim to the favorite's role for the 2014 national title. The mark added more than two feet to his previous school record of 197-5 which was set during the NAIA championships two years ago.
The distance not only leads the NAIA, but is currently the top mark for all collegiate athletes so far this spring. In comparison, only eight NCAA DI throwers have reached the 200-foot barrier over the past four seasons.
Two other Concordia joined Moses with NAIA 'A' standard performances as
Jessica Mattos (Corralitos, Calif./Aptos H.S.) earned automatic entry to the national championship sin the women's discus and
Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore./Sheridan H.S.) in the women's javelin.
Mattos took first place in the discus with a155-4 (47.34m) to move into fourth place on CU's all-timer performance list. Of the four women currently ahead of Mattos, three went on to win NAIA national titles in the discus.
Buchholz, meanwhile, unleashed the javelin 136-11 (41.73m) for the win and the No. 6 spot on CU's all-time list. Teammate Annaliese Wiseman, also making her Cavalier debut, threw a 128-5 (39.14m) for fourth place and No. 8 all-time at CU.
Carlos Ortiz (Salem, Ore./North Salem H.S.) highlighted CU's action on the track, moving into the school's all-time top-10 list in the 100 and 200. Ortiz crossed the line in 11.10 in the 100 for the school's sixth-best performance and 22.59 in the 200 for the eighth-best time in school history.
In the women's track events,
Rachel Siltman (Puyallup, Wash./Mount Rainier Lutheran H.S.) and
Holly Pfaff (East Peoria, Ill./Metamora H.S.) placed second and sixth respectively with times of 15.84 and 16.56. With the performance, Siltman moved into the No. 5 slot in school history while Pfaff earned the No. 8 position. Pfaff also cracked the school's top 10 in the high jump with a 4-9 3/4 clearance.
