Powers and Concordia Take Big Leads at Corban Invitational

SALEM – Behind the outstanding play of Sunny Powers, Concordia took a convincing 30-stroke lead after Monday’s opening two rounds of the Corban Invitational women’s golf tournament being contested at Creekside Golf Club.
The grueling 10-hour day featured 36 holes, and by 7 p.m. when the final groups came in the Cavaliers had carded rounds of 336 and 343 for a total of 679. Northwest Nazarene scored 345 and 364 for a total of 709, followed by Simpson (Calif.) with 372 and 361 for a total of 733. Rounding out the team totals were Corban 758 (386-372), Northwest Christian 776 (393-383) and College of Idaho 785 (391-394).
Powers sat in second place after the opening round with an 80, but she blasted away the competition in the second round with a four-over-par 76 on the 5,800-yard layout. Her 156 total is 10 strokes ahead of Samantha Miller from Northwest Nazarene, who carded 79 and 87 for a 166. Rounding out the top five were Concordia’s Kelsey Whiles with 169 (81-88), Simpson’s Christina Phelps 171 (87-84) and Concordia’s Jennifer Gibbons 173 (89-84).
The tournament concludes with 18 more holes starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
