NAIA D II Women's Basketball All-Americans Announced
CCC Has Five Recognized
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the 2014 Division II Women’s Basketball All-America Teams on Wednesday. Saint Francis’ (Ind.) Skylarr Shurn was named the NAIA National Player of the Year.
A key member of Saint Francis’ unbeaten season and national championship run, Shurn is the first Cougar to earn the Player of the Year honor since the award was established in 1998. The senior guard, who was also named the Most Valuable Player at the 2014 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship after scoring 30 points in the title game, led the NAIA in total scoring with 780 points, while also ranking among the top 15 in points per game (20.5) and steals (86). Shurn posted double-digits in 34 games this year, including six 30-plus point performances.
Saint Xavier (Ill.) forward Morgan Stuut and Roosevelt (Ill.) guard Casey Davis headline the eight repeat selections from a year ago. Stuut and Davis are both making their second-straight appearance on the first team.
Ariel Nickell of Alice Lloyd (Ky.) is the only three-time All-American among the three teams. Nickell, who was also named the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, ranked second in the nation with a 25.6 points per game average. She has ranked among the top five in points per game in each of the last three seasons.
Following the conclusion of the national championship, Saint Francis head coach Gary Andrews was named the Phyllis Holmes Coach of the Year. Andrews, who is in his 13th season with the Cougars, guided the squad to a 38-0 record en route to national championship, making Saint Francis the first team to go unbeaten en route to the banner since Morningside (Iowa) accomplished the feat in 2009.
The 2014 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball All-America Teams were selected by the NAIA-Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America Committee.
