Mitzel Named NAIA National Athlete of the Week
KANSAS CIty, Mo.-
Lexi Mitzel became the first woman in the history of the Corban track & field program to earn NAIA Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week recognition when the national office announced the weekly award winners.
A sophomore from Salem and a Cascade High School graduate, Mitzel won the 5000-meter run at last Saturday's Saints Open hosted by Mt. Hood Community College. She crossed the finish line in 17:37.46, automatically qualifying her for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships scheduled for May 22-24 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Mitzel's time also moved her within two seconds of the school record 17:35.82 set by Danielle Jordan in 2008. On Monday she was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Red Lion Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week.
"Lexi is very deserving of this honor," Corban head coach
Norm Berney said. "She has a tremendous work ethic, and to be recognized at the national level for her accomplishment last Saturday is great for her and the school."
