LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Warriors of Corban University used big innings in both games as the Warriors swept the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, 11-2 in five innings and 12-0 in five innings Monday afternoon at Peggy Anderson Field.
Game One – The Warriors of Corban struck first as Shelby Mauermann hit a solo home run to right center field and put the Warriors on top. Once the Warriors took the lead, Jessica Holsinger kept the Mountaineers’ bats quiet as she only allowed three hits through the first three innings of play.
In the top of the third inning, the Warriors added to its lead as Breonna Bejaran doubled down the right field line to score two and put Corban on top, 3-0. Corban continued to add to its lead and in the top of the fourth inning the Warriors exploded for eight runs.
Annie Owen doubled to right center to score two runs and extend the lead to 5-0. After back to back RBIs the Warriors found themselves ahead, 7-0. Corban was not done in the fourth inning as McCayla Hoffman hit a grand slam to put the Warriors on top, 11-0.
The Mountaineers broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two runners on base, Gracie Flyg singled up the middle to score one, putting EOU down, 11-1. Eastern Oregon scored one more in the inning to put EOU down 11-2 after four innings.
Eastern Oregon did not threaten to score again and were defeated in game one, 11-2, in five innings.
Game Two – Corban pounced on the Mountaineers early in game two as they scored in the first inning. With runners on second and third, Kyrianna Sorenson grounded out to first base and on the play, Owen came in to score putting Corban ahead 1-0. That was all the Warriors would get as Lindsey Walchli struck out the next two batters, ending the inning.
After the Mountaineers were retired in the bottom of the first, Corban’s bats came alive in the top of the second inning. Corban took advantage of three EOU errors in the inning and collected six hits, while scoring 10 runs in the frame. The Warriors saw eight straight hitters come to the plate and a run score. Before EOU retried the first batter of the inning the Warriors led 11-0.
Samantha Gutwig kept the Mountaineers’ bats quiet during the first three innings of play as she did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning and a runner on first base, Brittnee Carman-Rice singled through the left side to give EOU its first hit of the ball game. However, the runners were stranded on base and trailed at 11-0.
Corban added one more run in the top of the fifth inning. With two runners on base, Raimee Sluder singled up the middle to extend the Warriors lead to 12-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Gutwig gave up her second of the game as Georgianna Kelly singled to left field. After the next two Mountaineers were retired, JoElla Smith reached on a throwing error by the Warriors shortstop to put runners on the corner. However, the threat ended as Martell popped up to end the game and Corban defeated EOU, 12-0 in five innings in game two.
Eastern Oregon returns to action tomorrow when they travel to College Park, Wash. to face Walla Walla University in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Corban returns to action Friday, when they host Southern Oregon at 2 p.m.
