Sunset’s Taylor Harris signs with Concordia Hoops
PORTLAND, Ore.— Taylor Harris, a 6-foot-4 Guard from Portland's Sunset High School, has signed with Concordia University men's basketball team, head coach
Brad Barbarick announced today.
Harris, a three-year letterwinner for the Apollos, earned First Team All-Metro League and honorable mention all-state recognition this season while captaining Sunset to a Metro League Championship.
"We could not be more excited about Taylor coming to Concordia," Barbarick said. "Taylor is an outstanding all-around guard that is coming off a marvelous senior season at Sunset. He is an excellent student and with his versatility, he will not only fit into our system very well, but he will also be making a great addition to our campus."
The Apollos finished the year with a 21-7 overall record and, at 9-1, a nearly unblemished mark in the Metro League. Sunset ended the season with a win to finish fourth at the OSAA 6A State Tournament at the Moda Center in March.
In his senior campaign, Harris averaged 14 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting a staggering 51 percent from the 3-point line.
Harris was rewarded with a selection to play in the 20th annual Northwest Shootout basketball All Star game, alongside fellow Apollo and Concordia-signee Tyler Gutierrez. The event features high school seniors from Oregon and Washington and is held on April 26, 2014 at Liberty High School.
"Taylor is a great recruit for us. He is a rangy 6-4 athlete that brings a full skill set. He defends and rebounds very well, can get to the rim off the bounce and is an incredible shooter," CU assistant coach
Jeff Christianson said. "I played at Sunset for Taylor's grandfather, Ken Harris, and have seen Taylor grow up from the time he first started to play basketball. The scary thing is to think how good he can be down the line as his potential for growth is still off the charts."
Harris and Gutierrez will join current Cavaliers
Anthony Holton (Portland, Ore./Sunset H.S.) and
Daniel Duitsman (Portland, Ore./Sunset H.S.), giving the Cavs four Sunset grads on the roster next season.
"I am thrilled to get a person and player of Taylor's caliber, on and off the court, to Concordia for next year," Christianson said. "He is a prototype of the kind of student-athlete that we want to represent Concordia."
