KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) of Concordia (Ore.) has been selected as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and Wayne Northover of Wayland Baptist (Texas) has been named the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Clowes and Northover were selected based on their performances from April 7-13.
Northover's selection as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week breaks a streak of four-straight Concordia Cavaliers to earn the honor. However, with Clowes selection as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the Cavaliers have now had an award winner in each of the first five weeks of the season.
Clowes, a junior from Stoke-on-Trent, England, won the 1,500 meters at the Western Oregon John Knight Twilight on April 12 in Monmouth, Ore. While he outpaced the 24-man field to win the event by more than seven seconds over Cavalier teammate
Brad Prettyman (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.), the more impressive feat was Clowes' time of 3:44.14. The mark shattered Concordia's school record by more than five seconds and was also good for the meet and facility records. Within the NAIA, Clowes now holds a four-second lead on Lewis-Clark State's Sam Atkin (3:48.41) in the event this season.
Northover, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, posted this year's NAIA-best marks in the long jump and triple jump at the Abilene Christian West Kittley Invitational on April 12 in Abilene, Texas. His long jump of 7.66 meters (25' 1.5") was good for second place behind Jerome Wilson of NCAA Division I Texas Tech. His triple jump of 15.40 meters (50' 6.25") was third behind unattached competitor and NCAA Division I Abilene Christian (Texas) alum Idiato Jeremiah and Elton Walcott of NJCAA South Plains (Texas). Both of Northover's jumps were more than a foot better than the previous NAIA-best mark this season.
