Concordia's Clowes repeats as NAIA Track Athlete of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) of Concordia (Ore.) has been selected as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday.
With Clowes' second-straight selection as the NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the Cavaliers have now had an award winner in each of the first six weeks of the season.
Clowes, a junior from Stoke-on-Trent, England, earned his second-straight NAIA National Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week award after breaking the school record and recording an NAIA-best mark in the 800 meters at the 20th Annual Beach Invitational on April 19 in Norwalk, Calif. His time of 1:50.16 narrowly surpassed the previous school record of 1:50.57 and Southern Oregon runner Eric Avila's prior NAIA-best time of 1:50.89.
Clowes finished second among the 132-man field at the Beach Invitational to Nathanael Litwiller of NCAA Division I Sacramento State (Calif.), who ran a 1:50.04. Clowes also recorded a 3:45.35 in the 1,500 meters at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on April 18 in Walnut, Calif.—just over a second off of his newly-minted school record of 3:44.14 in the event.
The time was good enough for third in the event behind Martin Casse (3:44.92) of NCAA Division I Texas-Pan American and Matthew Fayers (3:45.09) of NCAA Division I Oklahoma State.
