McMINNVILLE – Markus Sanders stole the show in his debut for the Southern Oregon University track and field team Saturday at Linfield's Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational.

Sanders, a junior transfer from Modesto Junior College, won the hammer with a throw of 181 feet, 7 inches that made him an automatic qualifier for the NAIA Outdoor Championships. He also bested a 26-person field with a throw of 143-02 in the discus, the event he won twice at the Califiornia Community College Championships.

The Raiders got wins, too, in the women's 4x400-meter relay and the men's 4x100-meter relay, and six individuals were runners-up in their respective events.

The women's relay team – featuring Rachele Bedsole, Tierra Barrett, Aspen Abbott and Amelia Maguin – finished in 4:02.93, losing second-place Linfield by almost nine seconds. Maguin was also second of 30 in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 13.10 seconds, and fourth of 41 in the 200 at 26.69. Abbott ran the 800 in 2:21.07 to claim second place out of 20, just a second behind the winner.

Holly Haga also had an impressive showing for the SOU women, taking second in the discus with a throw of 135-07 – seven inches short of the win.

The men's 4x100 team of Kermit Knight, Cameron Bremner, Robert Benamati and Devan Barkley ran a 42.97 to edge Clackamas by a quarter of a second. Bremner additionally was second of 27 in the 100 (11.46) and fifth in the 200 (22.95).

SOU dominated the 1,500-meter run, placing fourth runners in the top 10 of a 45-person field: second-place Jared Hixon (4:00.39), sixth-place Aaron Brenton (4:04.83), eighth-place Trevor Flynn (4:06.31) and 10th-place Connor Cushman (4:10.61).

Anthony Neal had the final runner-up finish with a long-jump mark of 21-05.5.

In all, the Raiders reached 21 qualifying standards for the Cascade Conference Championships.

They'll be back in action next Saturday at the Chico State Twilight.
