Plenty of Action on First Day of 2014 CCC Softball Championship presented by U.S. Bank
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – On a sunny day to open the month of May, the 2014 Cascade Conference Softball Championships presented by U.S. Bank got off to an outstanding start at the OIT softball complex in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Game One – Concordia 10, College of Idaho 1 - Box Score
After College of Idaho opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first, the Cavaliers blew the game wide open in the third and fourth innings, combining for 10 runs to invoke the eight-run rule after five innings. Taylor Copher, Cassidy Horner and Taylor Bussey all hit home runs for Concordia as the Cavaliers chased C of I starter Nickayla Skinner in the fourth inning after Skinner allowed 10 runs, nine of them earned, in 3.1 innings pitched.
Game Two – Oregon Tech 7, Southern Oregon 4 - Box Score
Oregon Tech designated player/first baseman Cassidy Olson went three-for three with six RBIs on two home runs and a triple to lead the Hustlin’ Owls past fourth-seed and rival Southern Oregon in the first round game. Southern Oregon struck in the first and third innings as the game was tied heading into the bottom of the third but OIT exploded for five runs and held on to advance to play Concordia in the next round.
Game Three – Concordia 9, Oregon Tech 8 - Box Score
In a back-and-forth contest, the Concordia Cavaliers struck for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull ahead of the Oregon Tech Hustlin’ Owls and the Cavs held on for the 9-8 win. After heading into the sixth inning tied at 5-5, OIT’s Tori Weatherford hit a solo home run and the Hustlin’ Owls added two more to take a three-run lead into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, Kate Santos hit a two-run home run to pull within one and then Meghan Luebbert hit a two-RBI double to pull ahead as the Cavs pulled within one game of a bid to the NAIA Opening Round.
Game Four – College of Idaho 10, Southern Oregon 0 - Box Score
With elimination on the line, College of Idaho put up six runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead over Southern Oregon in the final game of the day and the Yotes continued to roll, earning the 10-0 win to move on to play another day. C of I starting pitcher Nickayla Skinner threw a two-hitter, striking out four and walking just one in five innings pitched.
The 2014 CCC Softball Championship presented by U.S. Bank concludes on Friday with the first game set for 11 a.m. The winning team earns an automatic berth to the 2014 NAIA Softball Opening Round, which is set to begin on May 12 at campus sites across the country.
