DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—With it stop two individuals carding 1-over 73s on Wednesday, No. 19-ranked Concordia remained in the top 10 through the second round of play at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships, held at the Jones Course at LPGA International Golf Club.
The Cavaliers started the day fifth in the team standings after matching par on the first tour of the course, but slipped three positions with a 12-over 300 in the second round.
Faulker University (286-289—575) climbed one spot to take the overall lead and will enter Thursday's round with a two-stroke lead over Texas Wesleyan (292-285—577) who used a second-round low of 3-under 285 on Wednesday to leap seven positions in the team standings.
The College of Coastal Georgia (285-296-581) and the defending national champions Oklahoma City (287-294—581) tied for third place after 36 holes while Florida's Johnson & Wales (292-290—582) rounds out the top five.
The Cavaliers will enter the third round just six strokes back of the top five and hold a three-stroke lead over chasers British Columbia (291-300—591) and Oklahoma Baptist (290-301—591).
Texas Wesleyan's big jump in the standings was the result of individual leader Jose Pablo Rolz (71-67—137), who fired a tournament-low 5-under 67 on the 6,928-yard course to claim a three-stroke advantage over Faulkner's Hrafin Gudlaugsson (71-70—141).
Individually,
Ryan Melnychuk (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley H.S.) (72-73—145) lead Concordia by playing 1-over par through 36 holes and sharing 13th place in the overall standings. One stroke back,
Jesse Heinly (Bend, Ore./Summit H.S.) (72-74—146) is tied for 27th place out of 156 competitors.
Hitting the team's second 1-over 73 in second round,
Kolton Kyne (Ridgway, Colo./Ridgway H.S.) (75-73—148) improved 25 places to end the day tied for 43rd place.
Josh Vizcaino (Vancouver, Wash./Evergreen H.S.) (76-80—154) and
Jess Wingett (Valleyford, Wash./Freeman H.S.) (69-82—151) closed out the Concordia contingent.
