DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Making the most of the team's first appearance at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships, Concordia University, ranked No. 19 in the latest coaches' poll, carded a 6-over 294 on Friday to place eighth overall out of 29 teams.
The tournament was reduced from four to three rounds after Thursday's action was suspended due to thunderstorms in the area.
Concordia (288-300-294—882) finished one stroke ahead of Tennessee Wesleyan (297-297-289—883) and five strokes ahead of Oklahoma Baptist (290-301-296—887) to crack the top 10.
Leaders after the opening round, No. 4-ranked College of Coastal Georgia (285-296-284—865) won the team title by four stroke over the two-time defending national champions from Oklahoma City University (287-294-288—869) and Texas Wesleyan (292-285-292—869).
Johnson & Wales (292-290-292—874) and William Woods (289-296-289—874) tied for fourth place to round out the top five teams.
Four strokes off the lead, Concordia's
Jesse Heinly (Bend, Ore./Summit H.S.) (72-74-69—215) wrapped up his collegiate career with a top-10 to finish to earn All-Tournament honors. Heinly finished with a 1-under 215 for three rounds of play to finish tied for seventh place out of 156 competitors.
Kolton Kyne (Ridgway, Colo./Ridgway H.S.) (75-73-72—220) and
Ryan Melnychuk (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley H.S.) (72-73-76—221) finished one stroke away from each other with Kyne using an even-par 72 on Friday to climb 13 spaces on the final day for a 30th-place result while Melnychuk carded a 5-over 221 for 36th place.
Jess Wingett (Valleyford, Wash./Freeman H.S.) (69-82-77—228) and
Josh Vizcaino (Vancouver, Wash./Evergreen H.S.) (76-80-78—234) rounded out the team in 76th and 118th place, respectively.
Also representing the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Northwest Christian's Tyler Falk (71-75-75—221), the league's Player of the Year, carded a 5-over 221 for 54 holes to come in with a 36th-place finish.
Oklahoma City's James Marchesani (70-72-69—211) and Grand View's Jay Monahan (69-74-68—211) finished the event tied for first with 5-under 211s, one stroke better than second-round leader Jose Pablo Rolz (71-67-74—212) of Texas Wesleyan.
