Sunny Powers (Medford, Ore./North Medford H.S.) fired a 7-over 79 on Wednesday to enter the second half of the NAIA Women's Golf National Championships tied for 12th place.
Just 2-over through her first nine holes, Powers (74-79—153) started strong for the second straight day, but bogeyed four of her last five to settle for a 79 on the second tour of the 5,962-yard Wilderness Ridge Course.
Playing on the same course, Powers tied for 11th place last season with a 75-80-77-78—310 at the NAIA National Championships.
Tied with four others at 9-over 153 for 36 holes, Powers remains just one stroke away from reentering the top 10 and four strokes away from cracking the top five.
Top-ranked SCAD Savannah (Ga.) holds a three-stroke lead through 36 holes at the 2014 NAIA Women's Golf National Championships.
The Bees, who qualified as the The Sun Conference Tournament champion, followed up their day one performance by shooting an identical 16-over 304 (304-304—608) to overtake defending national champion Oklahoma City. The Stars carded a national championships-low 14-over par 302 on day one to pace the field, but shot a 21-over par 309 to fall to second place on day two (302-309—611).
After 36 holes, sophomore Daniela Martinez of Northwood (Texas) paced the 144-player field at 2-over par (72-74—146). Martinez recorded an ace on hole No. 2 as part of an even-par 72 round yesterday and has also accumulated five birdies through two rounds of golf at the national championships.
Senior Elia Folch of Oklahoma City (72-75—147)—the 2013 national runner-up—and junior Alazne Urizar of SCAD Savannah (76-71—147)—the NAIA's No. 1 golfer based on scoring average (73.64)—sit one stroke back of Martinez at 3-over par. Urizar carded a 1-under 71 for the lone under-par round of day two action, moving from a tie for 20th to a tie for second in the process.
Third round action kicks off at 7:30 a.m. CDT Thursday with individual qualifiers Paige Moffat of Johnson & Wales (Fla.), Karina Palmberg of Point Park (Pa.) and Clarissa Molina of Missouri Valley teeing off on No. 1, while Rocky Mountain (Mont.), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) and USC Beaufort (S.C.) open on No. 10.
