GULF SHORES, Ala.—Sweeping the men's hammer and sending several competitors to finals, the Concordia men's track & field team took an early lead with 29 points on the first day of action at the NAIA National Championships on Thursday.

Darien Moore (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.), Adam Riddle (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor H.S.) and Nate Moses (Fresno, Calif./Bullard H.S.) went 1-2-3 in the hammer while Tyler Callahan (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) added a fourth-place finish in the javelin to give Concordia its first-day haul. In addition, Jordan Reeher (Prineville, Ore./Crook County H.S.) (400 hurdles), Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) (1,500) and Brad Prettyman (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) (1,500) survived their preliminary races to advance to the finals in their respective events.

On the women's side, Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore./Sheridan H.S.) earned All-American honors with a second-place finish while the 3,200-meter relay team navigated through the prelims to compete in the finals on Friday.

Behind Concordia's 29 points were Oklahoma City's 14 points and St. Francis' (Ill.) 11 points.

British Columbia captured the first-day lead on the women's side with 23 points, just ahead of Bethel (Ind.) 20 1/2. Concordia's eight points puts the Cavaliers in a tie for 10th place.

Thursday Event Recaps

1 p.m. – Men's Hammer Throw
Opening the meet in record fashion, Darien Moore (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.), Adam Riddle (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor H.S.) and Nate Moses (Fresno, Calif./Bullard H.S.) went 1-2-3 in the event to pick up 24 team points. The sweep represented the first time in NAIA Championship history one school has captured the top three spots in an event on the men's side. Simon Fraser University accomplished the feat in the women's 800 in 2010.

On their first throws, Riddle unleashed a 199-1 (60.70m) while Moses hit a nine-foot career best at 198-8 (60.56m) to give the Cavs the top two spots. Riddle upped his lead with a 206-0 (62.78m) in the third round and finished off his set with five of his six throws all cracking the 60-meter barrier.

In fifth place heading to finals, Moore, the NAIA leader entering the meet, uncorked a 211-1 (64.33m) on his fifth attempt to take the lead and nearly matched the effort on his final throw with a 210-10 (64.26m). Concordia-Nebraska's Cody Boellstorff placed fourth with a 195-8 (59.65m)

3 p.m. – Men's 400-Meter Relay (Prelims)
Entering the meet ranked 20th in the NAIA, the men's 400-meter relay team missed out on a trip to finals by .06 after crossing in a school record 41.49.

Carlos Ortiz (Salem, Ore./North Salem H.S.), Andre Washington (Vancouver, Wash./Hudson's Bay H.S.), Jordan Reeher (Prineville, Ore./Crook County H.S.) and Eric Tolento (Salem, Ore./McKay H.S.) toured the track almost a quarter of a second faster than the previous record of 41.72 and placed third in the section.

A 41.43 by Marian (Ind.) was enough to grab the eighth and final qualifying while the 9th through 13th place teams all finished within .04 of each other.

3:40 p.m. – Men's 1,500 (Prelims)
With the top four advancing to finals, Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) and Brad Prettyman (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) continued on in the 1,500-meter run with Clowes crossing in 3:53.43 and Prettyman a 3:53.29 in the first of two sections. The Southern Oregon duo of Jared Hixon and Eric Aliva crossed ahead of the CU pair to give the CCC all four of the automatic qualifying spots with Hixon leading the pack with a 3:51.13. Oklahoma Baptist's Adam Godwin took the second section with a 3:51.79. The finals of the 1,500 will be contested on Saturday afternoon.

4:25 p.m. – Men's 400-Meter Hurdles (Prelims)
Flirting with his career best despite relaxing down the final stretch, Jordan Reeher (Prineville, Ore./Crook County H.S.) easily advanced to finals with a 52.77 in the 400-meter hurdles. Reeher was second in his section behind Carroll College's (Mont.) Stephen Delaneym who posted the fastest time of the three sections with a 52.47.

Reeher entered the championships ranked sixth overall in the country with a season best of 52.88. Reeher has a lifetime best of 52.57 which stands second all-time on CU's performance list behind Curtis Parrish's 52.40 from the 2009 national championships.

5:05 p.m. – Men's 200—Meter Dash (Prelims)
Seeded 30th, heading into nationals, freshman Carlos Ortiz (Salem, Ore./North Salem H.S.) placed 15th overall with a 21.74 in the 200-meter dash prelims.

The school record holder with a school best 21.65, Ortiz placed third in the first section behind Wayland Baptist (Texas) sprinter Durawn Howard (21.10) and Marian's (Ind.) Gilberto Leija (21.55). Dickson State's (N.D.) Breyan Miller recorded the fastest time of the day with a 21.08 while Indiana Tech's Dontaey Paige nabbed the final qualifying spot to finals with a 21.41. 5:40 p.m. – Women's 3,200-Meter Relay (Prelims)
Entering the meet ranked seventh, the Concordia 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Christa Collmer (Boring, Ore./Sam Barlow H.S.)
Mikel Elliott (Randle, Wash./White Pass H.S.), Sarah Whybark (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak H.S.) and Brianna Keane (Bellingham, Wash./Sehome H.S.) proved to be title contenders with a win in the first of three preliminary sections on Thursday. Collmer opened up the quartet by passing the baton in the middle of the lead pack. Elliott stormed through the second leg to give the Cavs a 20-meter advantage. Taking the stick the final two positions, Whybark and Keane held off a challenge from Doane (Neb.) to smash the school record with a 9:10.07.

British Columbia won the second section with a meet-best 8:56.42 while Dordt (Iowa) claimed the final round with a 9:11.68.

4 p.m. – Women's Javelin
With a No. 3 ranking to start the day, Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore./Sheridan H.S.) improved a position on the medal stand to place second overall after a 149-6 (45.57m) on her fifth attempt. Concordia-Nebraska's Elizabeth King grabbed the lead on her second throw and extended the advantage with a 164-8 (50.19m) on her fifth toss for a 15-foot win.

Amber Corbett (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) also made finals, edging out teammate fellow freshman Shayna Wilson (Aberdeen, Wash./Aberdeen H.S.) for the ninth and final spot. Corbett placed ninth with a 127-3 (38.79m) while Wilson placed 10th at 127-1 (38.74m).

6:30 p.m. – Men's Javelin
After watching teammate Buchholz jump a spot in the women's javelin, Tyler Callahan (Estacada, Ore./Estacada H.S.) followed suit with a fourth-place finish in the men's javelin.

Callahan put together a consistent series after opening with a 210-6 (64.18m) before hitting his best of the day on his third effort.

Wiley University's (Texas) John Ampomah nearly set the meet record with a 244-2. British Columbia's Andy White took second at 237-4 and Benedictine's Lindon Victor third with a 217-6.
