GULF SHORES, Ala.—Projected to score in the 60s, the Concordia men's track & field team blew away all expectations by scoring a school record 87 points for a third-place result at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Tying the program's best finish from 2009, the Concordia men have now finished inside the top seven in the team standings for seven straight seasons. This year's total of 87 points crushed the 2009 team's previous record total of 51.5 points.
Indiana Tech successfully defended its title with 105 points. Concordia and Wayland Baptist were tied for second in the team standings heading into the final event, but a win in the 1,600-meter relay allowed the Texas school to nudge past the Cavaliers for second place with 93 points. The top three teams all posted scores well past Indiana Tech's 72-point winning haul from last season. Well back in the team chase, Oklahoma City placed fourth with 40 points.
The Concordia women tied for 21st place with 18 points as
Emma Buchholz (Sheridan, Ore./Sheridan H.S.) took second in the javelin,
Jessica Mattos (Corralitos, Calif./Aptos H.S.) fifth in the discus and the 3,200-meter relay also capturing fifth place to earn All-American honors.
"Coming in, we scored it out and we thought we would be around 69 points, so if you told me we'd go up to 87 I would have thought we would be in the top two most years that would win the title," CU head coach
Isaac Frederick said. "It's tough to be disappointed as everyone rose to the occasion, even those that didn't make finals hit or came close to lifetime bests."
Concordia's total would have been enough to win six of the last seven championship meets.
In all, Concordia posted 20 All-American performances with 14 occurring on the men's side.
Darien Moore (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) and
Nate Moses (Fresno, Calif./Bullard H.S.) captured the team's two national championships with Moore claiming the hammer throw title and Moses taking the discus crown. The duo also won their respective events at nationals to culminate their 2012 seasons.
Following their championships in the two previous days, the pair added second- and third-place finishes in the shot put on Saturday to give the throwing crew a total of 48 team points in the four disciplines.
"What the throws group accomplished was pretty special," Frederick said. "They would have beaten the fourth-place team all by themselves."
In addition, five school records were set along the way, including Moses' meet-winning discus throw of 202-9.
In other finals,
Matthew Clowes (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Westwood College) capped a big day with a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run and a fourth-place result in the 800. Clowes crossed in 1:50.59 for the 800 and 3:50.27 in the 1,500 for second place behind Southern Oregon's Eric Avila with a 3:48.93.
In the 400-meter hurdles,
Jordan Reeher (Prineville, Ore./Crook County H.S.) smashed the school record with a 51.47, nearly a full second better than the previous school best of 52.40.
The men's 1,600-meter relay team of Reeher,
Edgar Vazquez (San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Capistrano Valley H.S.),
Demetrius Rhodes (Portland, Ore./Benson Polytechnic) and
Andre Washington (Vancouver, Wash./Hudson's Bay H.S.) earned the men's team its highest ever finish in a relay event at the outdoor national championships. The Cavaliers placed eighth at the 2012 edition of the meet with Reeher, Vazquez and Washington all representing that squad as well.
Wayland Baptist won the relay with 3:10.10, holding off Oklahoma Baptist's 3:11.71.
