Annika Hayman provided assists on both game-winning goals for Concordia this weekend.
Cavs rally twice for 3-2 win over No. 18 The Master’s College
MEDFORD, Ore.—Giving up more than one goal in almost a calendar year, a span of 20 matches, the No. 1-ranked Concordia women's soccer team posted a pair of tying goals before senior Ashly Ames punched in the game-winner score in the final minutes of play against No. 18-ranked The Master's College on Saturday.
Statistics for the match were not available at the time of the release. With the result, Concordia improved to 2-0-0 on the season and will host NCAA Division II Saint Martin's University on Friday, Sept. 29 at Tuominen Yard. The match against Concordia represented the season opener for The Master's College. The Mustangs will return to action on Monday against Southern Oregon University.
Due to a handball in the box and a successful penalty kick, the Cavaliers found themselves down late in the first half before
Annika Hayman (Redmond, Wash./Redmond H.S.) was brought down inside the 18-yard line to draw a PK of her own.
Senior defender
Becca Long (Meridian, Idaho/Bishop Kelly H.S.) launched the free kick into the net for her first career goal while knotting the match at 1-1 before the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead, forcing CU back into unfamiliar territory. Unnerved with 10 minutes to go, senior
Alicia Kolter (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union H.S.) made it an even contest with her first goal of the season.
In the waning minutes of play, Hayman provided a final spark on the left side with a pass into fellow senior
Ashley Ames (Liberty Lake, Wash./Gonzaga Prep), who used a left-footed strike for the team's first lead of the day which would go on to stand for the team's 20th straight win dating back to Sept. 15, 2013.
"The players did a good job of playing calm as it was a physical match with a lot of fouls where we could have been taken out of our game. At the end of the day, it was a big early statement about the character of this team. They showed a lot of resolve and commitment to each other today," CU head coach
Grant Landy said.
