Three goals and a shutout led Corban to its second-straight win to open the 2014 campaign.
REDDING, Calif. – Senior forward Arsinio Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) found the back of the net twice on Saturday, and sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) scored his first goal for the Warriors as the Corban men's soccer team shutout Menlo College in a 3-0 win. That score-line is the second-straight three-goal margin of victory for the Warriors to open the campaign, with both wins coming on the road.
Similar to the start of the match against Simpson on Thursday, Corban hit the ground running on Saturday against Menlo as Walker scored the game's opening goal in the 4th minute to give the Warriors the early advantage. On the play, Dinnall hit a shot that was saved, but Walker was there to clean up and tuck the loose ball into the goal.
The Warriors led Menlo in shots at the halftime break, 6-5, and in corner kicks, 1-0.
Ready to build on the strong first 45 minutes, Corban wasted no time in doubling its lead in the second stanza, scoring in the 47th minute of play via another goal from Walker. After receiving a long ball from Dinnall, Walker took on and beat a defender before ripping a shot past the Oaks' goalkeeper. For Walker, it was his third goal of the season-opening road trip.
The Warriors iced the contest in the 65th minute when Dinnall ripped a left-footed half-volley, 20 yards from goal, into the back of the net to put Corban up 3-0 and seal the non-conference win.
"It was awesome to see the group jump out again to an early lead," stated head men's soccer coach Aaron Lewis. "I felt good about how we further established our style of play, and again the depth of our group was a factor in the result. Arsinio is establishing himself early in our season as a weapon and we hope that his work will open up chances for others in the near future."
For the game, the Navy and Gold led Menlo (0-1-0) in shots, 13-10, and in corner kicks, 2-0.
Defensively for the second-straight contest, senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) posted a shutout while earning the win, making four key saves in the process.
Besides Walker and Dinnall's offensive efforts, sophomore forward Bobby Hutchin (Vancouver, Wash.) and senior midfielder Eliseo Santana (Idaho Falls, Idaho) racked up five shots between the two, with Hutchin tallying three off of the bench.
Corban (2-0-0) takes a break from action until Thursday, September 4, when it travels to Walla Walla, Wash., to take on the Whitman College Missionaries in more non-conference action. Following their game with Whitman, the Warriors continue the road trip to Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. Both Whitman and Whitworth play in the Northwest Conference and are members of the NCAA Division III. Kickoffs for the two matches are set for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
