PORTLAND, Ore.—Pulling to within a game of the school record for consecutive wins, the No. 1-ranked Concordia women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over NCAA DII St. Martin's University on Friday afternoon.
The win improved Concordia's season record to 3-0 and gave the Cavaliers, who are coming off an NAIA National Championship, its 21st-straight win. The tilt was classified as an exhibition match for SMU. The Saints will open their season on Sept. 3 at home against Corban University.
After escaping an early push by the visiting side which included a shot off the crossbar by SMU's Taylor Gersch in the 8th minute, the Cavaliers notched three goals in a 13-minute span to quickly turn the tide.
Senior forward Alicia Kolter (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union H.S.) bookended the spree with connections in the 14th and the 27th minute while fellow senior Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.) recorded her second goal of the season in the 19th minute of action.
Annika Hayman (Redmond, Wash./Redmond H.S.) set up Kolter's opening attack while McKayla Madison (Bend, Ore./Mountain View H.S.) was credited with an assist on Kolter's second scoring shot.
Sophomore Emily Ponce (Camas, Wash./Camas H.S.) tallied her first career collegiate goal in the 39th minute of play to close the CU account. Taking the ball in the corner, Ponce worker her way around the SMU defender and inside the 18-yard box where she placed a left-footed crack just inside the far post.
"Obviously, I was very pleased with our first half," CU head coach Grant Landy said. "I thought we started the game in a very fresh and energetic fashion, and that led us to winning balls and playing our style. Our defensive shape was good, which translated well to winning balls and getting numerous players forward into the attack."
Overall, Concordia outshout the Saints 20-to-4. Olivia Brock (Olympia, Wash./Olympia H.S.) registered one save to pick up the win while teammate Nicole Franklin (Hillsboro, Ore./Century H.S.) saved one shot to preserve the shutout while taking over keeper duties in the second half.
Concordia will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
"I think our team is starting to gel and we are figuring out the roles for the players," Landy said. "We have another good opponent on Sunday in Rocky Mountain, so we will get right to work preparing for that match."
