MEDFORD – The Southern Oregon University women's soccer team got back to playing with a lead Sunday, it just couldn't hold one in a 3-2 loss to the Menlo Oaks at U.S. Cellular Field.
The Raiders (1-3 overall) put the Oaks (3-1) in a two-goal hole by the 24th minute, but it was leveled out by halftime and Rielle Dope converted a header off Savanna Schmidt's corner in the 70th minute for the game-winner.
Kendra Madaras-Kelly (Boise, Idaho/Mountain View) ended SOU's 192-minute scoreless drought in the 15th minute with a mop-up job of a counter that Elise De Jesse (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza) brought inside the box.
Nine minutes later, Avery Dutton (Windsor, Calif./Cardinal Newman) found an open Megan McArthur (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) 12 yards deep. McArthur sent a perfectly-placed shot from right to left, snuck just over Menlo keeper Jasmine Cordova's outstretched arms and just under the crossbar for her second score of the season.
Menlo's Brittany Wisecarver and Brittany Squarcia had the answers, however.
Wisecarver took a cross from Squarcia on a counter-attack and scored from 10 yards out in the 26th minute to cut the lead in half. The equalizer was the product of a straight-on free kick in the 41st minute that Jocelyn Aguilar touched and Squarcia rocketed home.
Despite the loss, there were encouraging signs for the Raiders – especially in the first half, when they got off seven of their eight shots. They also had an 8-3 advantage in corners.
The Raiders have three nonleague contests remaining, all on the road, starting with Cal State San Marcos on Sept. 8. They'll return to Ashland for Cascade Conference play on Sept. 25 and 27 against Evergreen State and Northwest University.
