OLYMPIA, Wash. – Playing an error-free second set, the College of Idaho Coyotes made quick work of the Evergreen Geoducks on Saturday night, winning a Cascade Conference volleyball match in straight sets, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13, at CRC Gymnasium in Olympia, Wash.
The Yotes (5-7, 2-1 CCC) took early control in the first set but the Geoducks (10-6, 1-3 CCC) worked hard to keep it close. College of Idaho took advantage of Evergreen attack errors to build an eight-point lead but the Geoducks fought back, using four straight points to pull with four at 19-15. Unfortunately for Evergreen, C of I came out of a timeout ready to finish out that set and Kylie Porter sent down the winning kill to earn the 25-20 win.
The second set was competitive early as the teams traded points but a 9-1 run put the Yotes up by eight and four straight points to end the frame gave C of I the 25-13 lead as Evergreen just couldn't stop the Yotes attack. College of Idaho hit .458 on the set, connecting for 11 kills with no errors on 24 swings.
If the Geoducks hoped College of Idaho would come back to earth in the third set, they were sorely disappointed as the Yotes continued to hit lights out. While not errorless like the second set, College of Idaho managed 16 kills with two errors on just 25 swings for a .560 hitting percentage as they earned another 25-13 win to clinch the match in straight sets.
Evergreen was led by eight kills each from Brandee Victorino and Nicole Diehl. Jaclyn Trinque put up 30 assists on 31 Geoduck kills while Evergreen combined for 34 digs.
College of Idaho was led by 11 kills from Katy Robinson, who committed just one error on 16 attacks for an incredible .625 hitting percentage. Emily Ottinger added 10 kills while Sierra Porter set up the Yotes attack with 38 assists. Kilee Lopez led all players with 13 digs on the night. The Yotes finished the match hitting .379, combining for 41 kills with just eight errors on 87 swings.
Evergreen will have some time to regroup as they play just one match next week, traveling up to Kirkland to take on Northwest on Friday night. First serve with the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. at NU Pavilion.
