Cavs close out Cali trip with 1-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—Outshot for the fourth time this season, the No. 1-ranked Concordia women's soccer team held off another upset attempt with a 1-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
Erin Huisingh (Pasco, Wash./Chiawana H.S.) provided the lone goal in the neutral-match contest held at Westmont College's Thorrington Field.
With the win, Concordia improved to 7-0-1 on the season while Kansas Wesleyan fell to 2-4-0 overall.
After a scoreless first half, Huisingh and fellow senior
Jasmin Ayala (Simi Valley, Calif./Valley Christian H.S.) hooked up in the 57th minute of play to give Concordia the lead despite being outshot 13-9 in the game and held to just two corner kicks.
Playing off the team's second corner kick, Huisingh initiated the game winner by playing short to Ayala, who quickly passed the ball back to Huisingh which setup a drive over WKU keeper Erin Kaprosy and into the netting inside of the far post.
"We knew going in that the beginning of the game was going to be challenging after an emotional win on Friday. It took us awhile to get going, but we got progressively more and more comfortable in the second half," head coach
Grant Landy said.
Junior
Nicole Franklin (Hillsboro, Ore./Century H.S.) collected her second win of the weekend by stopping seven shots to earn the shutout victory.
"Their record does not indicate just how good of team we just played. Kansas Wesleyan is a very organized team that has a good attacking presence." Landy said. "I was proud of how our team was able to step up to the challenge. Overall, it was a really good weekend to get these results in a tough place to play."
Concordia will now get a full week of recovery before its final non-conference game of the season with its next contest set for Sept. 21 at home against Trinity Lutheran. The Cavs will begin its CCC title defense at home against Northwest Christian on Sept. 25.
