Cavs continue streak with Oregon Tech sweep
PORTLAND, Ore.—Trailing 13-9 in the first set, Concordia reeled off 16 straight points for the opening win and never looked back en route to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) win at home against Oregon Tech on Friday night.
Oregon Tech (14-4, 2-2 CCC) had only five kills in the first set, but forced several Concordia (8-4, 5-0 CCC) errors to claim the early lead only to see CU's offense become unstoppable as Ashly Jibby chimed in with five of her match-high 12 kills during the extended streak last lasted through set point.
At 9-9, Oregon Tech stayed tied with the Cavs through the beginning of the second set only to see the CU defense step up, limiting the Hustlin' Owls to a -.132 attack rate I the second session for a commanding 2-0 lead.
Jumping out to a 15-4 lead, the momentum continued on to the finale for the Cavaliers as Jibby and
Brianna Hogan (Portland, Ore./Centennial H.S.) took over with eight kills between the pair. Down 20-8, Oregon Tech made a small rally with Kelsey Sampson earning several tough kills down the stretch.
Concordia outhit the Owls .266 to -.022 with a dominating 42 to 17 discrepancy in total kills. Hogan and
Brenna Huwe (Troutdale, Ore./Reynolds H.S.) finished with eight terminations each to trail Jibby while setter
Jenessa Taylor (Beaverton, Ore./Sunset H.S.) chipped in with five kills on six swings in addition to her 35 assists.
Sampson led OIT with five kills, one more than teammate Mykala Rubey.
Concordia's
Shantel Gritsch (Gresham, Ore./Clackamas H.S.) reached for 14 digs to lead CU to a 44-27 advantage in the category.
Concordia will look for it seventh straight win tomorrow as the Cavs return to action on Saturday by hosting No. 15-ranked Southern Oregon University (10-2, 4-0 CCC). Oregon Tech, meanwhile, will stay in Portland to face Warner Pacific College (4-6, 2-3 CCC).
