#5 Concordia Shuts Out Northwest
PORTLAND, Ore. – #5 ranked Concordia (Calif.) shut out the Northwest University Eagles in the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Concordia of Portland, Ore., this afternoon.
Concordia took an early 1-0 lead in the 5
th minute when Natalie Werner looped a 22 yard shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Eight minutes later, the Eagles from Irvine, Calif., would go up 2-0 when Megan Daniels intercepted an NU pass near the top of the box and put a blast to the right side of Patty Hughes for the score. CU’s defense would hold Northwest U without a shot in the half and lead 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, Concordia’s Lauren Nanez would finish the scoring for the day with her 12 yard shot from the left side off a double assist from Kendall Reekstin and Megan Daniels.
CU (3-1-0) totaled 18 shots for the game while Northwest U (1-4-1) managed two for the contest. Patty Hughes and Lauren Patefield split time in goal for NU with each grabbing two saves. Jazmin Alvarez earned credit for the shutout as she shared time with teammate Darby Clements in goal for Concordia.
Said NU head coach Val Seid, “We came out flat today and didn’t show well. We really beat ourselves, but it was a great learning experience for the team and we will grow from this loss. This level of competition will help prepare us for conference play.”
Northwest remains in Portland and will face another ranked NAIA opponent in #12 Vanguard of Costa Mesa, Calif., also out of the GSAC (Golden State Athletic Conference) tomorrow at 1 p.m.
