Oregon Tech Opens CCC Play with Sweep over Corban
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Renee Baumann finished with 10 kills and Madisen Garlie seven, as Oregon Tech swept by Corban University in the Owls’ opening match of Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball play tonight at Danny Miles Court 3-0, (25-12, 25-19, 25-21).
Oregon Tech moved to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in CCC action. The Owls take on Northwest Christian University on Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.
Corban, meanwhile, fell to 0-2 in the conference standings and are now 3-5 on the season.
Leading 9-7 in the opener, a Renee Baumann spike, along with three-straight Corban miscues made it 13-7 Owls. Madisen Garlie, Kelsey Sampson and Mykala Rubey kills pushed the home team to a 16-9 advantage. Using back-to-back aces from Tori Porter, during a 5-0 run for Tech, the Owls doubled-up the Warriors, 22-11, on the way to a 25-12 win in set 1.
Tech led 8-6 in set 2, but CU scored the next six, including back-to-back Shantelle Hill and Shelby Miller kills, followed by a Kasey Calderon ace, moved up 12-8. Corban held a four point advantage, 15-11, but the Owls scored the next seven points to take command at 18-15. Tech closed out the set, including four more Baumann kills in the stretch, to go up 2-0.
Tech jumped up 10-5 to open set 3, but Corban eventually closed the deficit to 17-16. Back-to-back Baumann spikes pushed the Owls out to a 19-16 advantage, however, CU used kills from Claire Bailey and Sloane Morris to tie the set at 19-all.
A Joelle Swanson kills spurred five-point run, as the Owls took set 3, 25-21, and swept the Warriors to open conference play.
Whitney Webster and Kelsey Sampson tallied five kills apiece with Baumann finishing with her match-high 10. Baumann finished with no hitting errors in 18 attempts to hit at a .556 clip. Garlie added seven spikes with Tori Porter and Megan Holland combining for 29 digs. Baumann notched a double-double after adding 10 digs. Jennifer Lakin tallied a match-high 14 digs in the win. Garlie and Baumann would combine for eight block assists, with Garlie leading the way with five and Baumann three.
Corban was led offensively by Shantelle Hill and Sloane Morrison with six kills apiece. Haley Meili recorded 25 assists with Katherine Salsness finishing with eight digs.
