Cavs dominate on the boards to defeat College of Idaho
PORTLAND, Ore. – After a back-and-forth first half, it was superior size that proved the difference as the Concordia University women pulled away from College of Idaho, 71-46, Friday night at Cavalier Gymnasium.
Jordyn Peacock submitted her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while
McKenna Daly added another 14 rebounds as the two Cavalier forwards nearly equaled C of I's entire team on the glass. Concordia outrebounded the Coyotes 51-35 in the contest.
Concordia (11-9, 5-6 CCC) was dominant inside from the start, though it didn't immediately show on the scoreboard. The Cavs went on a 10-3 run to take an eight-point lead midway through the first half, only to go down 21-20 after a scoreless stretch that lasted more than four minutes.
With two minutes to play in the period, College of Idaho (6-15, 5-7 CCC) trailed just 25-24. However, Concordia scored the final seven points of the half, including a
Lexi Campbell layup with one second left, to lead 32-24 at intermission. Daly and Peacock had already registered double-digit rebounds by the break.
After intermission it was more of the same, as the Cavaliers ripped off a 14-2 run over the first eight minutes to go up 46-26 and effectively put the game away. Shooting just 32 percent for the game and unable to get second chances against their taller hosts, the Yotes could not mount a serious comeback, trailing by double digits the rest of the way.
Concordia used its interior size to great advantage, swinging the ball to find open looks throughout the game. The Cavs had 19 assists on 24 made field goals and also capitalized at the free-throw line, shooting 15-for-18.
Sierra Dean and
Janae Klarich led Concordia with 14 points each and Klarich added seven assists, all in the first half. Haylee Burnham was the only C of I player in double figures with 14.
College of Idaho next plays Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. at Warner Pacific in Portland. Concordia hosts Eastern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 31.
