Northwest Tops Owls in Five
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Northwest University came back from a three point deficit in the final frame winning tonight’s Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match in five sets 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 15-9) at Danny Miles Court.
Oregon Tech is even in CCC action at 6-6 and 11-7 overall. NU moved to 9-5 in the conference standings and 13-6 on the season.
Trailing 6-8 in set 1, Oregon Tech capitalized on four NU miscues to gain a lead they would not relinquish. Three straight Kelsey Sampson kills, in a 5-0 run, saw the Owls move up 16-10 and methodically pull away for a 25-18 win to go up 1-0 in the match.
The two following sets went NU’s ways, as the Eagles took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Oregon Tech took the early lead in set 2, 11-9, only to see NU score five in a row, using a pair of Emmaline Stockton aces in the run, to take a 15-11 lead.
Whitney Webster and Bailey Nelson scores drew Tech to within three points, 19-22, but the Eagles tied the match after scoring the final three points behind Hannah Hanson and Dakotah Adams kills winning 25-19.
Tied 3-all, NU pushed out to a 14-11 advantage in set 3. Lara Linden and Mattie Jo Johnson kills, during a 5-0 run led to a 19-11 lead. Tech never got closer as the Eagles moved up 2-1 with the 25-15 win.
NU raced to a 9-5 lead in set 4, but the Owls would notch nine of the next 11 points, taking a 14-11 lead.
The Owls, up 17-15, jumped on the Eagles after Nelson recorded three kills, and Kristin DePaoli a pair, climbing to a 23-15 advantage. A DePoali score made it match point, with a NU attack error leading to a 2-2 tie in the match after the 25-20 win.
Leading 7-4 in the final set, NU used a Morgan Pilon kill, and a couple attack errors by the Owls, to tie it at 7-all.
Tech, leading 8-7, hurt their own cause in set 5, and after three attack errors, and a Leia Roy ace by NU, the Eagles took control, 11-8.
Another Nelson kill stopped the run, but NU managed to score the final four point to win the match after the 15-11 win.
Three Owls finished in double-digit kills with Whitney Webster leading the way with 11. Bailey Nelson and Kelsey Sampson added 10 with Sampson coming away with 16 digs. Brooke Molloy recorded a team-high 17 digs, while Tori Porter and Marlee Smith finished with 11 digs in the loss. Porter came up with 23 assists with Waverly Green recording 14.
Mattie Jo Johnson led the NU attack with 12 kills followed by Amanda Waterman with 11 in the win. Morgan Pilon finished with 30 assists and Emmaline Stockton a match-high 30 digs for the Eagles. Waterman and Leia Roy tallied 13 digs apiece.
