Goals by Reserves Lift Coyotes Past Geoducks
Visiting College of Idaho got all of its goals from substitutes in defeating The Evergreen State College, 3-1, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer match played Friday afternoon at Geoduck Pitch.
Bailey Watson and Megan Aumeier both recorded a first-half goal, and Mallory Cripps scored nine minutes into the second half as the Coyotes (12-2-0 overall, 8-1-0 CCC) continued its drive for a CCC regular season title. For all three players it was their first goal of the campaign.
The host Geoducks (2-10-0, 2-6-0) got a consolation score from MacKenzie Bolton with 45 seconds remaining in the game. For Bolton, it also was her first goal of the season.
College of Idaho outshot Evergreen, 23-9, and was particularly dominant in the opening 45 minutes with a 15-2 advantage. Corner kicks were more even with the 'Yotes getting five compared to three for the Geoducks.
Watson scored the opener at 23:03 into the first half, taking a pass from Summer Jackson and shooting from the top of the penalty box toward goal. The ball deflected off of an Evergreen defender, leaving keeper Alison Mackey with no chance. Aumeier's tally came at 35:35, also from near the top of the box, and trickled into the net after Mackey couldn't hold onto the ball.
College of Idaho took a 3-0 lead at 54:07 on the goal by Cripps, who dribbled to near the top of the box before hitting a right-footed rocket into the upper right corner of the net.
With time winding down, Molly Celler crossed the ball into the College of Idaho box. After the ball was bobbled away by the goalkeeper, Bolton tapped it into the open goal.
Brittany Houghton made two saves while playing 67 minutes in goal for College of Idaho. Abagail Castro played the final 23 minutes for the 'Yotes. For Evergreen, Mackey finished the match with five saves.
Evergreen returns to action at noon on Saturday when it hosts Rocky Mountain College at Geoduck Pitch.
