ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon University men's soccer team was denied a key victory Friday night as the Carroll Saints took it for themselves in a 2-1 decision at Raider Stadium.

Jacob Groh chipped in a point-blank shot in the 26th minute and Jose Porras converted a penalty kick four minutes later to give the Saints a lead they never gave back in the first meeting between the teams.

All three goals were scored within seven minutes of each other – Kirk Bassett assisted Greg Rapet's 20-yard liner that got under the crossbar for SOU's only tally in the 32nd minute – but solid opportunities were a rare commodity otherwise as the teams combined for six other shots on goal.

The Raiders went to 10-7 overall and 5-7 in CCC play. If they don't win Saturday's 5 p.m. contest against Great Falls, their last conference game of the season, they will be officially eliminated from CCC tournament contention.

SOU began the night ninth in the standings (eight teams make up the conference tournament field), but the Saints also needed a win to clinch a postseason berth.

And they got it, improving to 9-5-1 and 6-3-1, despite putting one less shot on goal (five to four) and getting six less corner kicks (10 to four) than the Raiders. Alessio Georgiades had the corner and was credited with an assist on the play that set up Groh's go-ahead score, which was a short turnaround shot blasted past the keeper.

Minutes later, the Raiders were whistled for a controversial foul that gave Porras his penalty kick. He slid it into the right corner of the net for his 10th goal of the season.

Great Falls was a 1-0 winner Friday at Oregon Tech, but, at 6-3 in the CCC, is the only team SOU can still jump for a playoff spot. The problem with that, however, is the Argos will close their season next weekend at Walla Walla and Multnomah, which have a combined CCC record of 1-21.
