Carlson earned his first career win as a head coach in the 16th-ranked Raiders' 104-82 win over Simpson on at Riehm Arena. The point total was SOU's highest in an opener in seven years, and Setzer's 27 points were the most for a Raider in an opener in six years. Of the 13 head coaches in Raider history, Carlson became the first to start with a win. Setzer, a freshman post from Crater High, debuted with an 11-for-16 performance from the field, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior point guard Ashley Claussen dominated the Redhawks in transition and went 8-for-12 with 22 points, nine assists and three steals. The Raiders also got career-highs of eight points and eight rebounds out of junior guard Demi Sahlinger, and junior forward Autumn Durand chipped in 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Forty-six SOU points were scored in the paint, resulting in a 49-percent clip from the field, and the Raiders maintained a 27-8 advantage in fast-break points. Emily Peters, also making her SOU at forward, added 10 points and six boards off the bench. Reserves Taylor Nuttall and Majerle Reeves had career-bests of eight points apiece. The Raiders jumped ahead 24-9 by the end of the first quarter and led by as many as 29 points in the fourth. Simpson (0-1) was led by Kelsie Jurjin's 19 points and six assists. The Redhawks were forced into 25 turnovers and shot 43 percent from the field. SOU will hit the road for Sunday's 7 p.m. game at California Merced.
