PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University volleyball team won their first ever set in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, but it wasn’t enough to get past Northwest Christian as the Lions lose 3-1 at home on Saturday night.

The Lions closed out their home conference schedule and drop to 2-19 overall on the year. They will play one final home game on Tuesday against non-conference opponent New Hope Christian. The Beacons keep their playoff hopes alive improving to 7-11 in conference play, 14-11 overall.

How it Happened: Both teams started out strong in the first set, each unable to secure a lead. With the set tied 15-15, the Beacons used a crucial 7-1 run to take a 22-16 lead late in the opening set. Earning the final three points, NCU took the early lead 25-17.

MU worked their way to tie the match in set two, stopping a streak of being swept by CCC teams. The Lions took an early 5-3 lead before four straight points increased the lead to six, 13-7. The Beacons tried to come back but the Lions proved resilient in the second set, using a 7-2 to secure the lead and tying the match one set each.

The final two sets landed the way of the Beacons, as NCU was able to string together point after point on numerous occasions, lifting them past the Lions to take the win.

By the Numbers: Freshman defensive specialist Devyn Sigurdson played one of the best games of her career, coming up with a school record 21 digs, helping boost the Lions defense. Patty Batoon had one of her most efficient nights, landing 15 kills off of 26 attempts while freshman setter Marissa Rhodes tallied 31 assists as she approaches the 500-mark in assists on the season.

For the Beacons, Kayla Ping and Cassidy Winters led the offense with 12 and 10 kills respectively while Marsha Poischbeg totaled 34 assists.

From the Coach: “Batoon had a huge night for us offensively and Sigurdson had a steller game defensively,” said head coach Jenna Bouey, “Rhodes had a great night as well and I’m proud of the team for getting their first conference set win!”

Coming Up Next: The Lions will stay at home for one last time as they welcome in New Hope Christian for their third meeting this season.
