Geoducks Come Up Just Short in Season Finale
TUMWATER - Myka Arneson and Molly Celler scored on headers but The Evergreen State College dropped its women's soccer season finale Saturday night, losing to the Corban Warriors in a Cascade Collegiate Conference contest played at Tumwater High School.
The match was moved to Tumwater when the Evergreen field was ruled to be unplayable following torrential early morning rainfall.
The Geoducks (2-13-0 overall, 2-9-0 CCC) scored two goals in a game for just the second time this season, with both tallies coming in the second half and pulling the team with a goal of the Warriors on both occasions.
Corban grabbed a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a Sadee Kallis unassisted goal, her fifth of the season. Her well-struck drive from the top of the penalty box beat Evergreen keeper Kayla Baskett to the left side of the goal.
The score stayed that way until the 60th minute when Lexi McQueary got her fifth of the season and Corban's second of the match. She beat her defender around the left wing and dribbled down the end line toward goal before centering to Katelyn Fekkes for a shot. The rebound off a defender came right to McQueary and she buried the ball into the back of the net.
Just when it seemed like the Warriors had taken complete control of the match, the Geoducks showed their resolve by scoring one of their nicest goals of the season. A cross from MacKenzie Bolton found Ava Mickola about 10 yards outside of the back post, and she whipped a cross back into the box where Arneson headed home for her first goal of the season. The goal came in the 63rd minute.
Corban added its third goal in the 82nd minute when Olivia Erskine headed home from McQueary's corner kick for her second goal of the campaign, but again the Geoducks had a strong answer. This was another top-notch goal for the Geoducks as Celler headed in Ellie Schmid's corner kick in the 86th minute. The goal was Celler's third of the campaign, giving her team scoring honors this season.
Corban ended up with a 22-6 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks to two for the Geoducks. Baskett recorded seven saves for Evergreen while Sheyenne Brusven made one for the Warriors.
