SPRINGFIELD, Ore.- After holding Eastern Oregon scoreless for 110 minutes, Carroll College junior goalkeeper Jamie Carter made diving saves on two different penalty kicks during the shootout to lift the Saints to the victory in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament presented by U.S. Bank. Carroll won the shootout, 3-2.
Eastern Oregon had scored seven goals in their first two games during the tournament but was held quiet in the first half as they took just two shot attempts in the first 45 minutes. Carter had more work to do for the Saints in the second half, making a trio of saves to send the game to overtime.
A quiet overtime period was followed by another, with EOU taking three shots in the final period. Two of those shot attempts were on target with Carter claiming another pair of saves. EOU ended the day with an 11-7 shot advantage. Carter owned six saves while Mountie keepers Jessica Parker and Tessa Pitzer each had a save in the shutout.
Carroll (14-5-1) advances to the NAIA National Championship tournament as both the regular season and tournament champion in the CCC. The second conference automatic bid goes to Eastern Oregon as the tournament runner-up. The teams will learn their destination and opponent for the opening round on Monday, November 16.
