NU's Jordan Asher led the Eagles with 20 points tonight.
Dordt Edges Eagles in Overtime
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Northwest University came back to tie the game in regulation, but fell 82-77, to the Dordt Defenders tonight in overtime in their opening game of the Holiday Inn Classic in Iowa.
Trailing by 15 points, 40-25, with 7:31 left in the third quarter Northwest U would cJordan Asher hit a jump shot chip away ath the Dordt as Paige Burson's 3-pointer with 3 seconds left in the period would make it 53-52 Dordt lead. NU would continue to stay with the Defenders and tie the game four times in the final period. Trailing 7-68 with 15 seconds remaining, Jordan Asher would hit a big basket with 10 seconds remaining to send the game into an extra period.
NU would lead twice early in the overtime, but Dordt would outscore the Eagles 10-3 in the final minutes to claim the victory.
Asher led Northwest U (2-2) with 20 points hitting 6 of 11 shots, 5 of 9 from the 3-point line. Freshman Mariah Stacona scored 16 points while Charmaine Bradford handed out 6 assists for the Eagles while scoring 8 points. NU shot 34 percent for the game.
Dordt (1-2) was led by Kim Kroeze's 16 points. Paige Engbers and Alissa Polema' each scored 15 points. The Defenders held a 53-35 margin on the rebounding, but Northwest U forced 32 turnovers.
Said Ken Crawford, NU head coach after the game, "I thought it was a great effort by our team tonight. I saw some real growth in a lot of areas and I am really proud of the energy and effort that was shown by our team. It continues to be a great trip for us and we are looking forward to playing again tomorrow."
Northwest U wraps up play in the tournament Saturday when they play Dakota State University at 12 p.m. CT at Dordt.
